A Sweet Picture Book About Puppies, Belonging, and Learning That Mistakes Are Part of Growing Up
I think puppies have a pretty difficult first few weeks. Everything is new, everyone has rules, and apparently some things are not meant to be chewed. 😂
Raising Beau: A Puppy’s Journey tells the story from Beau’s point of view as he figures out this strange new world called life with humans. When he first arrives at his new home, everything feels big and unfamiliar, and even taking that first step toward his new family takes a little courage.
Thankfully, Beau’s humans are patient. They give him a cozy place to sleep, help him understand the rules, and gently redirect him when he makes puppy mistakes. A shoe becomes a chew toy lesson, a bumpy car ride turns into meeting new dog friends, and those first nervous walks eventually become something Beau looks forward to.
I really liked the way Beau’s confidence grows through all these little experiences. He learns tricks, plays games, makes friends, and becomes more comfortable exploring the world, but the story never forgets that learning takes time. And yes, there are still a few accidents along the way. A favorite sock does not survive the experience. 😂
What makes the story especially sweet is that Beau’s biggest lesson isn’t about sitting, shaking paws, or behaving perfectly. It’s about knowing that he is loved even when he gets something wrong. His humans don’t stop loving him because he chewed the wrong thing or knocked something over, and that gives him the confidence to keep trying.
Author Michael Slupski was inspired by his real-life dog Beau and wrote the story from Beau’s point of view. That makes the little details of his puppy journey feel especially personal.

Make a Puppy Progress Chart. Ask children to think of something they once found difficult but can do now. Maybe riding a bike, getting dressed, swimming, or making a new friend. Draw three little pictures showing “I couldn’t do it yet,” “I was learning,” and “I can do it now.” It’s a simple way to show that confidence doesn’t usually appear all at once. It grows through lots of tiny tries.
Raising Beau: A Puppy’s Journey is a lovely choice for young animal lovers and children facing new experiences of their own. Sometimes what helps us feel brave isn’t knowing exactly what to do—it’s knowing someone has our back while we figure it out.
